I would choose to live in the 50s because that's the time when Americans reached the highest standard of living in the world. More women entered the workforce, even though they had about the same rights back in the 20s. Also because it was a time of great economic prosperity and all average families had extra to spend on vacation and such.
Like, Catherine I would also like to have grown up in the 1950s rather that the 1920s. During the 1920s the economic "boom" was based on credit, so Americans were spending a bunch of money that they didnt really have. However, because of the savings that accured during World War II, Americans had a lot of real money to spend in the '50s. Also, like Catherine said, it was a time of great economic prosperity, even more so than the '20s. If I had lived in the '20s, then I would have to suffer through the Great Depression that followed it. However, if I had lived in the '50s, I wouldn't experience such a economic crisis.
I agree with both Priyanka and Catherine. I would rather have lived during the 50's due to social and economical statuses. During the 50's there was much civil rights acts and freedom, and during the 20's there were too many domestic problems. For ex. the KKK. As for the economy, the 50's had a more stable money system, unike the 20's were a few years later there was a Great Depression like Priyanka mentioned.
I agree with Edgar and the rest of the people. I would like to have lived in the 50s. The 20s were good times, they were even dubbed Roaring 20s. I agree with Priyanka about the Great Depression. That is one of the main reason's I wouldn't want to live in the 20s. During the 50s there came a time of Civil Rights Movements. As an Chinese-American I would benefit. Also, during the 20s, the KKK made their target on more races.
I agree with the rest, I would rather have lived in the 1950's because of the economical state. The 1950's were a better time because of the changes in America. WWII had just ended and there were new freedoms during this time. There were more rights than in the 1920's. -Sagar Patel
I would definately choose the twentys just because i think it would be really fun to be a flapper. My mom tells me that i love to push limits and rules just to see what i can get away with so i have a feeling being a flapper and getting to test societys view of women and to go to speakeasys and dance all the time would be my thing.
I would choose to live in the fifties because not only were the 20s very liberal :/, the "economic boom" was false. People were buying on credit and although in the 50s there was the second red scare, I think it would have been a better time to live in. I'd fit in perfectly! Jeepers! :)
I agree with everybody but Dee, the 50's were way better than the 20's. It was a time of prosperity and not depression. Plus, like everybody else said, there were a whole lot more civil rights being passed for Blacks and Women. Also, like Derek and Edgar said, there were racist groups popping up in the 20's like the KKK. This was not a time of peace, unlike the 50's. Overall, the 50's were a better time period to live in. -Eddie Roman
I would choose to to live in the 20's. First i think it would have been kind of cool to be a flapper. Also i like music so the Jazz Age seemed very inspirational of youthful expression. I would also love the production of the automobiles having the affect on American life such as: traveling, shopping, and the sit in your car while you watch the movie thing. Also the effect of modernism was influential.
i would choose to live in the 20s. in the 20s everything began to grow. it was a "colorful" period. cars were being produced. the rate of children workers were going down. literature, jazz, and mass entertainment began to rise. women and african americans began to reach their goals and dreams and began to get the equaility that they deserve. the only down fall to the 20s is the KKK..... enough said. lol.
I would choose to live in the 20's. Although as previous people have mentioned, the economic boom was false, the 20's was a time of pushing the limits. The 20's allowed for people to become modern and for them not to conform to the societal normalities as in the 50's. I do agree with Courtney about the downfall of the 20's being the uprising of the KKK. That isn't cool.
Discussion Blog: I've created this blog to supplement class discussion. Questions will be posted at random and often coinciding with discussion questions from class.
Points: Each time you make a comment to any question on this blog you will get 1 speaking point added to your discussion grade (for all you modest mice).
Comments: Should be at least 6 lines in length, thoughtful, relevant, polite, politically correct, clean, and feature analysis and evidence. They should also address at least one other person's comment on the question (unless of course you are the first to comment!)
