The Cold War

Consider the costs of the Cold War. Was there a "cheaper" way to achieve the same results? Was the war mismanaged? Or do you see it as a time when capable Presidents acted with wisdom?

  1. During the Cold War, Eisenhower did in fact act with wisdom. His main goal was to lower budget and somewhat boost the economy and lower expenses for "keeping the peace." During his presidency, the atomic bombs were made so they cost less and could be produced more. That way, America would be known to be a power house, capable of getting their way done. Eisenhower was smart in achieving his result, sure there might be some other ways of achieving the same results by a "cheaper" method; but what Eisenhower did was something out of his wisdom.

  2. I agree with Edgar in that Eisenhower acted with wisdom in managing the issue of the Cold War. The time of great prosperity is evidence of this, and lowering the budget also proved effective. Truman also did a good job with his containment policy, but it was costly in entering the civil wars of Korea and Vietnam, but it was to stop communism from spreading.

  3. I agree with Catherine that Truman spent too much on the War. Many Americans started to complain because they felt that too much money, and too many supplies and lives were wasted in the Asian countries. I believe that the President should put more emphasis on domestic issues instead of worrying too much about what may happen in countries around the world. In that way, I don't see Truman as a capable President. However, Eisenhower did act with wisdom. Like Edgar said, he tried to lower expenses so that he could help the American economy, showing that he was more focused on America that on the spread of communism in other countries.

  4. I agree with Edgar that Eisenhower acted wisely during that time. The bombs made were more powerful and cheaper. This was smart to get ahead in the arms race. There might of been a cheaper way, but it might not have achieve such results. I don't agree with Priyanka on that the president should worry about their own country second to worrying about the spread of communism, because the US might of been attacked or influenced by communism.

  5. I believe that Eisenhower acted with wisdom during the Cold War. Like Edgar said, he worked to lower the budget and boost the economy. Eisenhower also avoided an actual confrontation with the Russians and that was a wise decision. The cheaper way might not have been the best way to manage the war.

  6. I do believe that the presidents acted wisely during the cold war. And that they did intend to help the economy and they found ways to stay in the game while reducing spening such as the bombs they built. but i do not believe that war was the cheapest way to deal with the issues. another alternative might have been to consistantly pursue negotiations with the other countries but that alternative would not have gotten the same or projected america as such a world power as the war.

  7. I agree with everybody above. Eisenhower did do a good job with trying to save money or make things cheaper. The war in fact did help along with this, the creation of cheaper bombs like Derek and Edgar said was influenced by the war. I disagree with Dee about the negotiations. It might have been cheaper, but like Sagar said; cheaper isn't always better.

  8. I do agree with everyone above. I feel that Truman did spend too much time trying to contain communism. I feel that his goal was not too realistic in that he wanted to contain all of communism. However I feel Eisenhower acted with wisdom because he had a plan to contain communism by offering other countries financial support. The cheaper way to deal with this problem would be to take focus off nuclear weapons, but that might not have been as effective.
