Does media have a strong impact on public opinion today? Do the people dominate the media or vice versa. Has this tendency changed since the days of Pulitzer and Hearst?
Media has a strong impact on public opinion today. Today, yellow journalism has a new meaning because journalists only write to give the people what the people want to hear. In other words, the people dominate the media. Yellow journalism has changed since the days of Pulitzer and Hearst because these days the journalists are competing to be the best, such as The Enquirer, The Star, the Globe, the Sun, the Examiner, etc. And they use often use false sources and try to make their stories as sensational as possible.
Media is incredibly important in America today. I agree with Catherine when she says that the people do dominate the media. Because of the Internet and it's accessibility, people can easily read and post their opinions. A lot of what the media puts out is because the people want to hear about it or read it. Therefore the people have a huge say of what sells and what doesn't sell.
I believe that Media does have a strong impact on American opinins today. But i believe that the media dominates the people. Yes People can post their opinions, but the selection of topics they have to choose from is controlled by the media. I believe the media controls the opinions of the American people because instead of telling the people what they want to hear, they tell the people what should be important to them and let the people think that the things they are voicing opinions on is their idea.
I definetly think that the media has a strong impact on America today. I agree with Dee that the media dominates the people. While it's true that the public decides what sells and what doesn't sell, the media has a greater effect on the people. When people hear about products and their benefits, the products become popular; when people hear that certain products cause problems (such as Toyota and social network sites) they are discouraged to buy or use the products. Many American girls use fashion magazines to decide what styles are in, what colors to wear, what kind of makeup to use, etc. Of course, with the Internet, the media is more accessible than ever, so people are constantly aware of what is "in", and what is not. So all this shows that the media affects public opinion.
I also agree with the above comments that media has a huge impact on public opinion, especially in the political and economical aspects. Mainly, there are the more conservative news networks such as Fox News (Claimed by the White House to be the GOP's research arm) and more liberal-supportive news networks like CNN and MSNBC. I think that for the most part, people watch these news networks based on their political viewpoints and thus, the content that the networks release will have a huge impact on public opinion as one news network will choose to publicize perhaps a Republican failure widely while the other news network might bypass it.
Also, the media represents a prominent topic of discussion among people. At the workplace or just during society, we often discuss the news and how it relates to our life. As a result, the media sort of dictates the content that we discuss and judges it to be important or unimportant in some cases.
Overall, the media has a huge impact on our everyday lives and has many influences on our views especially depending on which news network/radio station/newspaper one regularly keeps track of.
I agree with Dee that media dominates the people more-so than the people dominating the media. With the introduction of the internet, almost anyone can make news. Anyone can voice their opinion to a large crowd. People can dominate the media in this way, but the media (made up of few select people) have a larger effect on the people. They are the ones the tell you what you want to hear and set trends. I agree with Billy, media largely influences our views and everyday lives. Whether we like the media or not, we still tend to follow it.
The media is one of the driving forces in America today. We are being heavily by the media in almost every aspect of our lives. We hear about the economy, natural disasters, Iraq, and everything from them. The media is very biased. It can shape the way we feel about political figures and world events. This is much like the propaganda in yellow journalism. -Caroline Worthy
I agree with the people above that say the media dominates the people. The media influences many people daily on almost all aspects of life. They are also able to "control" the way we feel about certain things. The media tells you what they want you to hear. There are many media sources in today's world and they are followed by mostly everyone. -Sagar Patel
Discussion Blog: I've created this blog to supplement class discussion. Questions will be posted at random and often coinciding with discussion questions from class.
Points: Each time you make a comment to any question on this blog you will get 1 speaking point added to your discussion grade (for all you modest mice).
Comments: Should be at least 6 lines in length, thoughtful, relevant, polite, politically correct, clean, and feature analysis and evidence. They should also address at least one other person's comment on the question (unless of course you are the first to comment!)
