I Have a Dream
In light of King Day take a moment to look at some sections of Dr. King's famous speech "I have a dream...". If you've never seen it in its entirety do yourself the favor.
React to this post by perhaps assessing the extent to which you believe the dream has been both deferred (Langston Hughes) or realized in 2009.
Consider what we've covered for race relations in America and anticipate what we'll see into and beyond the 1960's.

I think that Dr. King's dream was realized to a certain extent because there is a lot more respect for different races. There is also not as much racism and we all have the same rights according to the government. The different races of the US are considered free simply because we live in a free nation. I think that his dream has been deferred in a way because even though racism might not be as obvious as it was during the 1960's and beyond, it still exists. There is still prejudice throughout different races and discrimination still continues even though it is not as obvious as it was during the enforcement of the Jim Crow laws. So even though a lot of America's mentality has changed, we still have a little way to go in order to completely realize his dream.
ReplyDeleteLike Nia, I agree that civil rights have been achieved, to an extent. We don't have segregation in America, and blacks (as well as other races) can have all the rights that Americans have. Throughout most of the country, we respect other races and cultures and try to understand their perspective. However, there are those few conservatives who are still a little racist. Even though they can't be racist publicly, some white Americans still believe that other races are below them. Stereotypes of different races still exist. In this sense, Dr. King's dream has not fully been realized yet.
ReplyDeleteI agree with both Nia and Priyanka. The dream has definitely achieved in a overall sense. There is much more races now and much more diversity. There are more than just white and black people. Today, all of us have the same rights, privileges, and freedoms. "Black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls and walk together as sisters and brothers." However, with all this said, there is still some racism today. One reason for this is because there are more races in America today, and they tend to stick with their own kind.
ReplyDeleteI believe that now the dream had become realized more than it has before. because now we are finally starting to look beyond race to judge people when it comes to jobs, and their character as a person. I agree with nia in that not everyone feels this way unfortunately and i feel like older generations are deffering the dream because they have old school views and are stuck in the mindset of slavery. But i for one can testify to the great change that has occured since the time of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everybody in that the Dream of MLK has been finally achieved. Everybody has equal rights and no more discrimination. But there are some minor problems like Dee and Nia mentioned. Some people still have the racist mind and think they are better then other races. This is mainly seen in the South, where people are supporting the Confederate and stuff. Despite this issue, we have come along way for equal rights for all.
