Slavery

If it wasn't for the issue of slavery, the civil war would never have happened. Assess the valididty of this statement.

  1. i agree but then i dont because slavery was not the only cause of the civil war. but it was a main cause. I think the civil war started because the north and south had two different ways of life and they clashed.

  2. I see the statement as valid. I agree with Courtney Anderson saying that slavery was not the only cause, but it was the main cause. Slavery distinguished the life and economies of the north and south. The south's economy depended on slavery. Wars usually start with contrasting sides. The north woulndn't have been satisfied if everybody did not agree on the issue of slavery.

  3. I agree with what Derek said. The Civil War was started by the North in response to the South's secession, due to slavery. When the north started the War, it was in order to piece the Union back together and prevent the South from becoming independent. So, had it not been for slavery, the South likely would have not seceded, and there wouldn't have been a war at all.

  4. I don't think the Civil War could have been avoided, even if slavery didn't exist. Like Courtney said, the North and the South had two completely different lifestyles. Slavery was not the only part of that. Because of the fertile soil in the south, agriculture would have become a major industry, with or without slavery. The large plaantations that developed lowered the chances of urban areas developing in the south. Also, the political and social views of the North and South differed greatly. So, the Civil War was almost inevitable because of the differing lifestyles of the North and South.

  5. I agree with Priyanka, as she brings up the fact that the environment largely determined the economic choices they made. I do not believe the war could have been avoided, even if slavery was not an issue. If slavery did not exist, then industrialization, which was allowed for in the first place by surplus created by specialization, would have slowed down. But the delay would still eventually lead back to the economic sectional differences, with the tariff and states' rights as the two main factors as the government grew to favor industrialization rather than agriculture. The war, originally fueled by slavery fanaticism, would die down from its original intensity. But I do not believe there would have been any way to avoid overall sectional tension.

  6. I agree with Priyanka as well. The Civil War was more about the vast differences between the North and the South. The North and the South had almost two different cultures. The South felt very neglected and some of the policies being passed didn't help them at all. While slavery was a major difference and did add fuel to the fire, I also feel that the war would have happened anyway. The Civil War started because of their "cultural differences" but definitely ended in a slavery debate.
