Por Que?

Consider the most important changes of the Gilded Age

Scandal and graft
reform movements
Consolidation and trust
government passivity
poor leadership
Rapid growth
Westward expansion
Urban difficulty
Farmer's issues

Are these different from eras of the past? Are the same elements developing? Why is all this happening now?

  1. These occurences such as scandal, passivity of the government and expansion are all rhymes with the past. Expansion in older days was exemplified with the move into the New World and then the move out of the thirteen original colonies. These problems are occuring now because the time was prime for these changes, although they did not happen simultaneously they happened close enough to be grouped togethered and all give more grief to the already struggling Gilded Age.

  2. The most important changes of the Gilded Age was the shift from more of political reform to economic reform. Economic in the way that the government is focusing less on politics, but more on issues such as trusts, the silver and gold issue, and basic issues with factories and labor unions. Economic differences within the party are no different now then they were in the past. This could be seen with an issue such as the National Bank. It split the parties into what they personally wanted. Just like the gold and silver issue split the Republicans and Democrats. I also agree with what Elisa said, not only is expansion a familiar concept in American history, it also contributes to problems that have been seen in the past.

  3. Some of these changes are different from those before the Gilded Age. For example, scandal is present in the Gilded Age to a much greater degree than in the past. Urban difficulty also played a greater role, especially as immigration was expanding and cities were becoming filled, mainly in the North. However, most of these changes are still present in the modern day. The major exception is westward expansion - we already expanded as west as possible in this worldwide society.

  4. i believe that rapid growth, farmer issues, and reform have bee seen in the past. and i believe that all of these things are happening now because of the westward expansion and rapid growth. because of these things the country became more disconnected in that the northeast was more modern and started to be more industrialized while the west and south were still agrigulturally based which created tensions that were made worse with the passive gov't of the time. but i do not think that the same elements are developing now.
