Cities

There is a myth that cities are more prone to violence, corruption, dishonesty, and immorality. Is this a myth? Do cities really breed immoral life?

  1. I believe that the cities provide a "better environment" for violence, corruption, dishonesty, and immorality to develop. First of all, there are more population in the cities, and these population are more dense. Therefore there are more interpersonal relationships which are the root of the immoral acts. The cities usually are also more developed in economy, social life, and government participation. Therefore there are more competitions in everything. As the cities provide the ground for these competitions, there are always someone who want to do better than others in the same field. Because it is not very easy to achieve so, competitions become adverse which lead to immoral or illegal actions such as corruption and violence.

  2. I agree with Eileen with her statement about the population causes immoral acts in cities. Because of the large amount of people, it is easier to get away with certain acts that would not usually happen in a more country area. The city also brings about different kinds of people from different economic backgrounds as in country areas the people do not vary too much economically. Because of the economic difference in the city, there is more reason for immoral acts. People in the city are able to get ahead in life in the city even although it might be in a dishonest way. While in the country, although immoral acts do happen, there is not as much reason to commit them because most people are on the same level.

  3. I agree with Eileen and Nia that cities are prone to violence, corruption, dishonesty, and immorality. There is always a small proportion of the population that commit these kinds of acts. Since cities have huge populations, the small proportion equals a large number of people. Also, cities are usually more ethnically diverse. This might might cause dishonesty and racism among the people there.
Like Nia said, because cities have large populations, it is easier to get away with certain acts. People feel braver about commiting immoral acts in cities because they can easily blend in with the large numbers and it is harder for them to get caught.

  4. I agree with Eileen, Nia and Priyanka's statements about how cities are more dense in population and that can hold a bigger chance of immorality. Within smaller suburbs and towns there isn't as big of a population to hid the suspicious activities of crimes in. So immorality in larger cities is more evident because their are more people which, of course, holds more chances of immoral acts.

  5. No i disagree with all of you! =-P haha i believe that it is a myth because there are probly the same crime rates in big cties as their are in smaller ones the only difference is that the population in big cities is more. for example if there are 100 crimes for every 1,000 people a town of 1,000 will only have about 100 crimes while a big city with millions of people so it seems like more crime and violence because ofthe concentration of people.

  6. I strongly disagree with Dee along with the other people. I agree with Eileen on that population leads to immoral life. Because of the large population, cities have much more social activity than rural areas. Also, cities have diverse demographics. This most likely will lead to racism and violence. I strongly agree with Nia saying that it is easier to get away with immoral acts because of population. In a rural area, they are not as much people, so people are scared to commit such acts because they have a higher chance of getting caught. Also cities usually have many rich people, and they are targeted to be robbed.

  7. I would say I have to agree with Eileen and Derek. Cities bring together many different kinds of people, values, and customs, all in a very confined space. When these things are brought together, it can lead to violence and immorality. Also, city populations contain people of varying wealth, ranging from the wealthy upper society wealthy people to the poorer classes. As Derek said, this can lead to not only higher robbery and crime rates, but also corruption.

  8. Cities are said to be more prone to violence just due to the number of people. When you get so many people packed in one area, there are bound to be problems. I agree with cory. There are so many different customs and rituals with people in cities, and when you put together stubborn people who have had their religion or way of life or whatever it may be questioned, it will lead to bad things.
