I think the most important cause of the civil war has got to be slavery. The election of Abraham Lincoln led to the immediate secession of the south, starting with South Carolina. Thus, the Confederate States of America was formed and the Union was divided. Both the north and the south's views on slavery were opposites and very different. The northerners, seeing slavery as a sin and cruel, couldn't cooperate forever with the south. Especially when new territory was added, thus arising more controversy on slavery on whether it's permitted or not.
As Catherine said, slavery was truely one of the main causes of the Civil War. Especially with the election as was stated above. Also, things like "Uncle Tom's Cabin" incresed the tension between the North and South. Another factor was that of the Republican group rising against the Democratic group. This made the South feel as if there was no chance for them to elect their president. Also, the Kansas&Nebraska act, and the Utah&New Mexico acts (as catherine said) caused the tensions of whether or not slavery should be allowed.
Along with the moral issues that Edgar and Catherine brought up, the economic differences brought tension. The South with their unchanging plantation system was competing with the Northern factory system. Protective tariffs at the time found support from the Northerners but Southerners did not accept the tariff as fair.
The slavery issue that Edgar and Catherine mentioned was part of the bigger issue of states' rights, which I think is a major cause of the Civil War. The majority of the poeple in the South would have been satisfied if the number of free states and slave states remained the same. However, the Compromise of 1850 ruined the balance, created tensions between the North and South and ultimately led to the Civil War.
The most important cause of the civil war was the tension between the North and South, slavery being one of the factors within this issue. But there was more to the disagreements than slavery, the North and South had different lifestyles which created different parties between the two halves of the country.
I agree with Elisa. Slavery is the biggest factor. But the others came from the North and South being so different. They believed in different things and they lived different lifestyles. So because they were so different from each other they clashed.
Discussion Blog: I've created this blog to supplement class discussion. Questions will be posted at random and often coinciding with discussion questions from class.
Points: Each time you make a comment to any question on this blog you will get 1 speaking point added to your discussion grade (for all you modest mice).
Comments: Should be at least 6 lines in length, thoughtful, relevant, polite, politically correct, clean, and feature analysis and evidence. They should also address at least one other person's comment on the question (unless of course you are the first to comment!)
