Andrew Jackson was both a hero and a villain. He tried to make the nation democratic, but did it in a forceful way. There was the fair rotation of offices established by him, but there was also the tyrant side of him in that he enforced the Force Bill against SC over the "Tariff of Abominations". He was against the Indians forming a confederacy within the nation, so he brutally pushed them out west of the Mississippi River. He was definitely a democrat, in that he opposed the national bank and favored limited government. (Catherine Fu)
Jackson was a villain. Catherine's post brings up the "fair" rotation of offices, but I don't believe it should be described that way.It was called the Spoils System for a reason, he was simply giving benefits to those who supported him. This led to the filling of position by the incompetent and the crooked. He also exercised the his ability to veto more than all of the presidents before him put together. He closed the national bank against the advice of two of his Secretary of Treasury and enforced the Specie Circular, all leading up to the Panic of 1837.
I agree with Danny Vu in saying that he was a villain. He posed good ideas but in really he knew what he wanted and thats what he went for. He force people to be on his side by taking things away from those who wasn't on his side. But i agree with Catherine in saying that he was a Democratic because of his beliefs but he wasn't because of his actions.
Discussion Blog: I've created this blog to supplement class discussion. Questions will be posted at random and often coinciding with discussion questions from class.
Points: Each time you make a comment to any question on this blog you will get 1 speaking point added to your discussion grade (for all you modest mice).
Comments: Should be at least 6 lines in length, thoughtful, relevant, polite, politically correct, clean, and feature analysis and evidence. They should also address at least one other person's comment on the question (unless of course you are the first to comment!)
